A World Class Education for Every Michigan Child

At a Glance:

  • Ensure that every child receives a comprehensive, equitable, World Class education;

  • Promote universal access to quality early childhood learning;

  • Continue the tough rigorous standards to ensure Michigan students have the competitive skills to succeed;

  • Hire additional teachers to reduce class sizes and give students the individual attention that improves learning;

  • Work to ensure equity in state education spending to end the regional disparity in school funding that hurts local kids;

  • End the shameful use of our school children as political pawns in the budget debate over school funding – no more cuts to education. Period.

  • Dramatically increase funding for universities and community colleges to ensure every Michigan student has access to an affordable college degree;

  • Expand scholarship opportunities to bring the dream of a college degree within reach for every Michigan student; and

  • Expand the ability of Michigan workers left behind by the changes in our economy to obtain the additional education and skills training they need to reenter the work force.

A comprehensive education is one that starts well before kindergarten. I support programs that provide the opportunity for quality early childhood education for every child in Michigan, as well as outreach and support to their parents. In addition, to be competitive in the 21st-century global knowledge and information economy, we need to do much more to ensure that every Michigan student has the opportunity to obtain an affordable college degree, as well as post-high school training and apprenticeship programs. Finally, it is difficult to receive a World Class education in classes too large to allow for individual attention to individual learners. As such, I support hiring additional teachers to reduce class sizes significantly.

We also need to ensure equity in education, focusing especially on the rural areas of our state that are too often underserved and inequitably funded. I would support measures to close the funding gap between rich and poor school districts to ensure quality in every school district. Every child deserves an equal chance at success.
